About Ten Pin Bowling
10 pins are placed in a triangular shape at the end of a wooden lane, a player has to hit these pins with a bowling ball & try to knock down as many pins as possible. One game consists of ten rounds and points are allotted to the players based on the number of pins knocked down. The player scoring the maximum points becomes the winner.
Ten Pin Bowling - the playing arena
The lane is a smooth, narrow surface at the end of which the bowling pins are placed in a triangular shape by an automated machine. At the beginning of the lane is a foul line which should not be crossed by players while playing. The gutter is parallel to the lane and the balls fall in this gutter if it falls off the lane.
Ten Pin Bowling - Equipments
The two main equipments needed for a game of Ten Pin Bowling are Bowling Balls and 10 Pins. Typically a ten-pin bowling ball has a smooth surface except for the finger drills to hold the ball. The diameter of the ball is 8.5 inches with a circumference of not more than 27 inches and the weight is below 16 pounds.
Usually made of light weight wood, the Pins are 16 inches in height and 4.7 inches in width. The weight of the bowling pin is between 1.5 – 1.7 kgs.
Ten Pin Bowling - How to play
Each game comprises of 10 rounds which are called frames. Each player has two chances in a single frame to knock down all the pins at the end of the lane.
If the player successfully knocks down all the ten pins in a single attempt it is called a Strike. If there are any pins still standing at the end of the lane, the player gets another chance to knock them down.
When a player successfully knocks down all pins in the second chance it is called a Spare.
When the bowling ball hits any of the pins and they fall down because of a chain reaction it is called Pin Scatter
