Arcade Games – In a Nutshell

  • 31 July 2019

Amusement & Entertainment has always been a part of life of humans in every civilisation. We have proof that even in the Stone Age, people devised unique ways of entertainment. Each civilisation had its own entertainment in the way of celebrating festivals, music & dance, leisure and competitive sports. Man is a social being always seeking amusement & pleasure and more so in the company of friends & loved ones. Many games & sports have evolved over generations where an individual or group would play while others cheer them on. Other than music, dance, chess there were hardly any options for indoor games or entertainment, hence earlier generations were highly active in all form of outdoor games & activities. The advent of video and online games may have reduced the number of players we see on the field, but social beings that we are we still play online with friends & strangers alike.

The millennials today maybe obsessed with PUBG, Fortnite and Pokemon Go but Arcade Games in India remain very popular. Coin or card operated Arcade Games machines, usually installed in restaurants, bars and amusement areas are known as Arcade Games. Most arcade games are video games, pinball machines, electro-mechanical games, redemption games and merchandisers.  The first popular arcade games included shooting galleries, ball-toss games, and coin-operated machines like those that claimed to tell a person's fortune or that played mechanical music.

The gaming & entertainment industry in India has come a far way since its emergence in the late 80’s when amusement centers & arcade games gained popularity in the metro cities. Amusement Centers in India were hardly existent then but restaurants & game parlours installed arcade games to capitalize this popularity. Slowly & steadily arcade games in India gained popularity among children & adults alike with Amusement Centers coming up in prime locations. The Amusement Centers not only catered to gaming & entertainment for all ages but also offered a variety of options in food & beverage which was a huge draw for families to spend time together on weekends & special days. Amusement centres still continues to be a major attraction with arcade games, bowling alleys and redemption games in metro & as well as tier 2 & 3 cities in India.
